Gait Analysis

What is gait analysis?

This is the dynamic assessment of the foot and lower limb with the use of high speed digital video analysis.

HFS uses high quality digital video software to capture and slow down your movements to allow in depth clinical interpretation of your movement patterns. From this the overuse injuries commonly associated with poor foot and lower limb function in both running and walking can be identified. With this information it is possible to then correct with the use of orthotic devices and physiotherapy the underlying causes of these problems effecting long term relief of symptoms.

HFS use Quintic software with video cameras and treadmill mounted with surround mirrors for a view from all angles to accurately capture the problem.

We can then pin-point where the foot and ankle are failing to control the forces of running - otherwise known as poor foot function. From this, we can work out the exact location of the ankle or foot pain and where the treatment and rehabilitation is most needed.

Gait analysis is important as part of a holistic approach to the treatment of foot, ankle and leg disorders, as well as back pain and injury.

Treatment

The resulting treatment might incorporate the prescription of orthotics and advice on the type of running shoes / sport shoes you should be wearing. Running shoes are very important and contribute to the overall foot function in a variety of ways. Often shoes can be matched to foot types such a pronating or rigid foot but over all their significance is outweighed by the need for sound lower limb biomechanics.

It has been estimated that as a rule of thumb shoes can only improve or reduce the function of the foot by approximately 20%. Not many people can run without them due to our modern evolutionary habit of using footwear, but they still do not take a priority over the need for sound biomechanics.

We recommend shoes from the Brooks, New Balance and Asics ranges in this order of preference for use with orthotic devices when running.
